The Vineyards Wine Tasting

Cappadocia, located in almost the geographic center of Turkey, is often called the jewel of Central Anatolia.  Its otherworldly landscape is hard to describe.  Perhaps moonscape says it best.  From its conical rock outcrops to its churches, chapels, and homes carved into lava rocks to its underground cities, Cappadocia is like few other places on earth. Its underground cities, some eight floors deep, were built to protect the early Christian inhabitants from invaders.  Present-day Cappadocia is known for its apricots, cherries, and sugar beets, as well as its carpet weaving and decorative pottery tradition.  And, more recently, wine-making.

This one-day Cappadocia tour combines a bit of sightseeing with a visit to the oldest wineries in Cappadocia.

Your sightseeing will include a walk through one of the valleys famous for its rock formations of fairy chimneys and mushroom pinnacles and a visit to Kaymakli, an underground city.  You will also visit Sinasos, a preserved Greek village now known as Mustafapasa, with its exquisite stone masonry on the facades, balconies, and windows of its 19th-century houses.  The Greek inhabitants of Sinasos left during the exchange of populations between Greece and turkey in 1923.

You will visit two wineries, one founded in 1943 and now run by the third generation of the founding family.  In 2001 it began to grow grape varieties unique to Turkey.  The other winery has a rock-carved wine cellar, which you will be able to walk through.  You will learn about the growing process, the winemaking process and the history of wine itself.  And, of course, there will be ample wine tastings.

Established in 1943, Turasan is the oldest wine producer in Cappadocia. It is now run by a third generation Turasan. Turasan Wines have been awarded gold medals in Turkey and three of its wines have received silver medals in the World Competition of Wine in Brussels, a first for Turkish wines.

We will start our day with a short morning walk through some rock formations of Cappadocia before proceeding to Turasan’s Zeynep Vineyards. The Zeynep Vineyard was started in 2001 to grow international and autochtonous grape varieties of Turkey. We will visit the vineyards and learn about the growing process. We will then go to the Turasan Winery to see its rock carved wine cellar and learn about the wine making process. We will taste some wines before going to explore the rock cut churches in the Goreme Valley. We will have lunch in a small family run restaurant in the Aravan Village.

In the afternoon, we will visit the Greek Village of Sinasos, now known as Mustafapasa where we will see examples of exquisite stone masonry on the façades of 19th century houses. Our final visit will be to the underground city of Kaymakli.

Finally, we will stop back at the Winery for a seminar on the history of wine by Murat Yanki, a wine teacher and researcher of the history of wine.
